Hull Structural Designer, rule calculation (Helsinki Shipyard)
We are Helsinki Shipyard – celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.
With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

Since November 2023, Helsinki Shipyard has been part of the Canadian Davie group.
We are looking for a Hull Structural Designer (rule calculation) to join our competent design team.
In this role, you will be a key player for the structural and classification design in the yard's hull design department. Your main responsibility will be structural calculations according to class rules and classification drawings and documents.
Your work is independent, but you also need teamwork skills when working as a part of the hull design team, as well as the yard's extensive design organization.
Currently, we have 11 designers on the team, and we are growing. Around 2/3 of the team focuses more on basic design and calculations, and the other part focuses on production design and production support.
To succeed in this role, you need:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, for example in Naval architecture
- Experience in strength calculations and structural design, either from work or studies
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
- Good communication skills in English
Experience in structural drawings, Classification Society Rules, working with ship design and using Napa Designer and Napa Steel is seen as an advantage, but can also be learned in the role.
“The ship project takes from 2-3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port”
- Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer
