Structural Detail Designer (hull structures)
We are Helsinki Shipyard – celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.
With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!
We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030. Read more about the project here!
We are looking for a Structural detail designer to join our competent Hull Structural Design team. Currently, we have fifteen designers in the team, and we are growing. Around 2/3 of the team focuses more on basic design and calculations, and the other part focuses on detail design, production design and production support.
In this role you will take part as a detail designer for Hull Structural Department.
Your role includes modelling work and model checking for the entire project building process. Work with change requests for structural design has an important role. A typical workday includes resolving design solutions together with other designers and departments, production specialists and production, taking part in project organization meetings, and reporting modelling progress. The main role is in detail design but occasionally classification design and other design tasks will be on the task list. The main design tools are Aveva Marine and Autocad.
To succeed in this role
You would ideally have a technical background and modelling experience in structural detail design. A good knowledge of the English language (both written and oral) is necessary.
An ideal candidate would be a team-player with good attitude. Being organized and having the ability to search for information from multiple sources at the same time will help you to succeed in this role.
We hope that you are familiar with structural design work. Experience in the field of shipbuilding or other marine industry would be beneficial.
“The ship project takes from 2-3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port”
- Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer
