Lead Detail Design Designer, Interior Design
We are Helsinki Shipyard – celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.
With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!
We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030. Read more about the project here!
We are looking for a Lead Detail Designer for the Interior Design Department. We offer a unique position in the global shipbuilding industry, overlooking a dynamic project portfolio of high-quality passenger vessels and special-purpose vessels. You will work with a skilled team of designers from various backgrounds and as part of a multidisciplinary design and project organization.
In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the detail design areas within a specific project. Your key responsibilities include ensuring high-quality project execution and adherence to the project schedule. In a typical assignment, we coordinate the detail design of passenger and crew areas, making sure that all necessary workshop drawings and corresponding part lists are completed to a high standard. This ensures that the final product meets expectations in both appearance and quality. These drawings typically cover ceilings, wall panels, furniture, and floor coverings. Depending on the construction method used in the project, you may also be responsible for supervising the work of a turn-key supplier.
Your role includes coordinating the department's detail design project tasks for the entire project life cycle. You will also manage resource needs in cooperation with the head ot the department and the project organization. A typical work day includes overseeing design work while resolving design solutions together with other designers and production specialists, taking part in the project meetings and reporting project progress. You will also participate in developing detail design in Helsinki Shipyard.
To succeed in this role you have at least
- A Bachelor's degree from a relevant field
- Ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- A good knowledge of the English language (both written and oral) is necessary.
- Although we usually value diverse backgrounds in this position, this time we are specifically looking for someone with prior experience in ship design projects.
- We hope that you have experience in project management or other similar project coordination tasks, but with the right attitude, you can also succeed even if you are new to management roles.
You can choose your primary office location between Helsinki Shipyard in the heart of Helsinki or our design office in the city center of Turku. Our team members work in a hybrid model, both remotely and on-site at the office, depending on the tasks and project phase.
