System Designers, Electrical & Automation
We are Helsinki Shipyard - a company designing, building and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. Our roots date back to 1865, and we proudly continue the story of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, in the heart of Helsinki.
With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 65% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

Since November 2023, Helsinki Shipyard has been part of the Canadian Davie group.
We are looking for Electrical & Automation System Designers to join our team of designers. Depending on your role, you can take responsibility in either:
- Automation
- Lighting
- Low Voltage Design
- Navigation & External Communications Systems
- Internal Communication Systems
- Propulsion & Power Distribution Systems
- Security Systems
As a System Designer you are an expert of your field, preparing the necessary drawings, material specifications and calculations, and sending them for approval according to the schedule provided by the project organization. In your role, you will participate in the basic and detail design of a shipbuilding project. You will also participate in the selection of the system supplier, the preparation of tender surveys, factory tests and support the production during the system commissioning phase.
You will join the Electrical & Automation team. Additionally, you’ll work with our seasonal workers and subcontractors. Collectively, we're roughly 400 professionals specializing in shipbuilding.
“The ship project takes from 2-3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port” - Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer.
To succeed in this role, you should have some experience from the fields mentioned above and basic knowledge of AutoCAD design software. Your work is independent, but you also need teamwork skills when working as part of the shipyard's extensive planning organization.
Experience from shipbuilding projects is highly appreciated, but not a must. English is necessary as we have international clients and suppliers.
What makes us a good choice?
- Our designers participate in the whole process from drawing first drafts to collaboration with suppliers to the finished product. In the end, you get to see your handprint at one of our piers.
- In our close-knit Design team of approximately 70 individuals, everyone is familiar with one another, and everyone has a mandate to make a true impact in the projects.
- Environmental responsibility is a core value for us. As part of our commitment, we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.
Our main office is centrally located in Hietalahti, Helsinki. You may also work in our office in Turku. Our team members work in a hybrid model both remotely and on-site at the office, depending on the tasks and project phase.
