System Designer, Heating Systems
We are Helsinki Shipyard - a company designing, building and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. Our roots date back to 1865, and we proudly continue the story of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, in the heart of Helsinki.
With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 65% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

You are responsible for the regulatory, economical and qualitative design choices throughout the whole project.
Your role includes producing drawings and other design documentation for the basic design phase of ship projects. “The ship project takes from 2-3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port” - Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer.
Ideal experience and background:
- Bachelor's/Master’s degree in a relevant field (eg. Energy technology or Naval architecture) OR experience in heating systems from working as a Chief Engineer in a ship.
- Knowledge in heat generation, steam systems, hot water/thermal oil /glycol-water distribution systems and heat recovery systems.
- Work experience in project business, for example, as a designer. Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is a must.
Skills in tools like Excel, AutoCAD and MagiCAD are highly appreciated. Fluent English is necessary as we have international clients and suppliers.
Experience from ship building is not necessary, so if you have experience for example in power plant technology and would like to learn more about ships and deepen your technical knowledge, don’t hesitate to apply.
What makes us a good choice?
- Our designers participate in the whole process from drawing first drafts to collaboration with suppliers to the finished product. In the end, you get to see your handprint at one of our piers.
- In our close-knit Design team of approximately 70 individuals, everyone is familiar with one another, and everyone has a mandate to make a true impact in the projects.
- Environmental responsibility is a core value for us. As part of our commitment, we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.
Our main office is centrally located in Hietalahti, Helsinki. You may also work in our office in Turku. Our team members work in a hybrid model both remotely and on-site at the office, depending on the tasks and project phase.
